Meet the Author - K.E. Barden

K.E Barden - Indie Author

At Book Besties Bookstore, we believe in connecting readers with the stories that feel like home — where stories meet their people. One of the best parts of what we do is shining a light on indie authors who are building magical worlds, taking creative risks, and carving their own path in publishing. Today, we’re excited to introduce you to indie fantasy romance author K.E. Barden.

K.E. Barden has always loved books and storytelling. Like many authors, her writing journey began in school, where she started multiple novels during high school but never quite made it past the 30,000-word mark. Everything shifted in 2018 when she committed to NaNoWriMo with the intention of finally finishing a book. Writing entirely on her mobile phone, she completed The Gilded Mirror — her first novel — and officially stepped into the world of indie publishing.

Her work sits firmly in the fantasy romance genre, drawing heavily on fairytales, magic, adventure, and sweeping romantic arcs. Inspired by iconic stories such as Lord of the Rings, The Mummy, and The Princess Bride, her books blend wonder, romance, and escapism for readers who love immersive fantasy worlds with heart.

K.E. Barden’s publishing journey hasn’t been without its challenges. She initially worked with a hybrid publisher, but when the experience didn’t align with her goals, she made the difficult decision to reclaim her rights. After successfully getting them back, she republished the first three books in her Finding Ever After series in new editions throughout 2024 and 2025. Since going fully indie, she has found greater creative freedom, control, and success, noting that the series always felt perfectly suited to the independent publishing space.

Her latest release is the fourth book in the Finding Ever After series, which will span five books in total and is expected to be completed in 2026. Alongside this series, she is also preparing to release a pirate romantasy duology next year, while exploring ideas for future standalone and series projects.

When it comes to her writing process, K.E. Barden describes herself as a “plantser.” She works from loose dot points rather than detailed outlines, allowing her characters and story to evolve naturally. This approach gives her direction while leaving room for unexpected moments, character growth, and creative surprises that often become the most exciting parts of the story.

One of the most rewarding aspects of being an indie author has been the sense of community. While independent publishing can be isolating, social media has opened the door to connection, collaboration, and genuine reader support. Having full creative control over every stage of the process has also been a deeply fulfilling part of her journey.

The biggest challenges she has faced include navigating the early stages of publishing, fighting to regain her rights, and learning how to stand out in an oversaturated market. Like many new authors, she encountered misinformation and scams, making community support and shared knowledge crucial in avoiding costly mistakes.

Balancing writing with marketing, social media, and the business side of publishing remains an ongoing challenge. Between creative work, personal responsibilities, and day-to-day life, passion is often the driving force that keeps everything moving forward.

For aspiring authors considering self-publishing, K.E. Barden’s advice is to research thoroughly and find a supportive community of fellow writers. She encourages authors to connect genuinely, support real human artists, and remain open to learning new skills. With the right mindset and support system, the indie publishing path becomes far less daunting.
